SORRY! THIS IS A LONG ONE :( Even before getting my acceptance to Keio, I got an email letting me know about housing registration. According to my inbox, I received my registration email on Thursday, December 12th. Three days later on Sunday the 15th, I got my official acceptance to the university! The pre-registration requires you to register with the Keio housing system. It is simply just creating an account with an email (I used my hawaii.edu email) and a password. In the meantime, you can look at the available dormitories HERE. My friend and I decided to do the housing application right when it opened. The application period started December 17th at 10 am (Japan time) and ended January 14th at 10 am. This meant that the application opened at 3 pm on the 16th in Hawaii. We both decided on dormitories that we liked (based on previous blogs and our own research). Unfortunately, this was during the time that I was attending my make-up pre-departure orientation for MIX, so I did let the coordinator know that I would be doing this as the orientation went on. We were on the registration page a little before 3 pm and immediately started our apps when the clock hit 3. The actual application entailed selecting our top three choices and (I think) selecting a reason that we chose that dorm from the drop down list given. Below is a screenshot of my choices in order! It is VERY IMPORTANT that you APPLY ASAP! The school emphasizes that dorms are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Once you make your selections and submit your app, you should get a confirmation email from the school. The next step is to wait until they give you confirmation on which dorm you were assigned to. The housing page told us that this would be announced on January 27th (Japan time). In this email, Keio's housing lets you know that you must return to the housing page to fill in your arrival details (port of entry, airline, flight number, anticipated check-in date, etc.). This email also lets you know that if you choose to cancel housing for any reason, to let them know by February 3rd, Japan time. If you choose to cancel after this date, you will be charged 50,000 yen (~$500 USD). An important thing to note about your check in is that there are two days (Tuesday March 24th and Wednesday March 25th) from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. The school mentions in their email that students planning to check in immediately after landing should plan to land no later than 2:00 pm at Narita or 4:00 pm at Haneda. If you do land later, you probably will not make it in time to check in. For me, I think thats all I have to do for housing for now! My dorm looks super nice & I am still super excited!

On Jan 27th I got assigned my dorm! I unfortunately did not get my first choice, which was the Motosumiyoshi Residence. Instead, I was assigned to my second choice, the Motosumiyoshi International Dormitory. It is slightly more expensive than the Residence, but it is one of the two newer dorms built in Spring 2018! Below is the housing cost and facility accommodation for Spring 2020.
I was initially disappointed that I did not get my first choice, because it was cheaper and I knew a few of the previous scholars had written about their positive experiences there. However, when I saw pictures and videos of what my dorm looks like, my disappointment went away! It looks really nice, clean, and has a lot of modern features (along with a private bathroom!). As of today, I have less than 2 months left in Hawaii! I'm really excited to start my life in Japan :) |
